The Anambra State government has begun evacuating people from flood-hit areas near rivers due to increasing water levels in the River Niger and River Benue. This rise in water levels over the past few days has caused significant flooding in some communities, forcing residents to move to safer locations.
Among the most affected areas are Ogbaru, Anambra West, and Ayamelum local government regions. In Ogbaru’s Atani community, the flood has halted all activities as water continues to spread throughout the area.
Paul Odenigbo, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), spoke to journalists in Awka on Friday. He explained that the flooding began on Wednesday, and the state government has responded by helping residents relocate to higher ground. Odenigbo assured that all necessary support has been provided to reduce the worsening effects of the floods as heavy rains continue.
“In some local governments, we have made plans to evacuate over 3,000 people using boats. These people are willing to move to higher and safer areas,” Odenigbo said. “The governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has ensured that essential supplies like blankets, mattresses, soap, and buckets have been provided for those in temporary shelters.”
The state has prepared camps to accommodate those displaced by the flooding, ensuring that facilities such as water and toilets are available. Odenigbo also urged the public to listen to flood warnings and pack important items like documents and medications as they prepare to move to the camps.
On Thursday, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency issued a fresh alert, warning communities along riverbanks to evacuate immediately due to the rising water levels in the River Niger and River Benue.
The state government remains committed to helping all affected residents and ensuring their safety during this difficult time.
