A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a strong warning to Adeola Ajayi, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), for failing to comply with court orders regarding visitations to Nnamdi Kanu. Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been in DSS custody since his re-arrest in 2021 and faces serious charges, including treasonable felony.
Kanu’s legal team has repeatedly claimed that the DSS is blocking their access to him, despite a court ruling that he should be allowed to meet with his lawyers on specific days. On October 18, the court registrar issued a “Form 48 notice,” warning Ajayi that failure to allow these visitations could lead to imprisonment.
The notice emphasized that Ajayi must permit Kanu’s lawyers to meet him on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. If he fails to comply, he could be found in contempt of court and face jail time. The court previously ruled that up to five members of Kanu’s legal team should be allowed to visit him on these designated days, but the DSS has allegedly ignored this directive.
Aloy Ejimakor, one of Kanu’s lead attorneys, expressed frustration with the situation, stating that they have not been able to see Kanu for almost a month. He also warned that if the DSS continues to defy the court’s orders, they will have no choice but to initiate contempt proceedings against Ajayi.
“This notice is a warning for anyone who disobeys a court order, highlighting the potential legal consequences,” Ejimakor stated. He made it clear that if the DSS Director-General does not change his actions, they will take strong legal action against him.
The situation remains tense as Kanu’s legal team continues to fight for his rights and access to legal counsel.
