On Sunday evening, a devastating tanker accident in Lagos resulted in the tragic loss of three lives. The incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. at Second Rainbow, a busy area near Mile 2 along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that the fully loaded tanker experienced brake failure, causing it to collide with two Volkswagen commercial buses and a Honda car.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker was traveling at high speed when it suddenly lost control. It crashed into the two buses and the Honda car, which were also on the road at the time. Unfortunately, the three victims were passengers in one of the Volkswagen buses and succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The impact of the crash was significant, and emergency responders arrived promptly to manage the situation.
LASTMA officials were quick to respond, securing the area and ensuring the safety of other road users. They coordinated with the Lagos State Fire Services and the Lagos State Ambulance Service, who arrived to provide assistance and transport the injured to nearby hospitals. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to the police, and one family member was present to take custody of their loved one.
Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, expressed his condolences to the families affected by this tragic event. He stated the importance of road safety, especially for drivers of heavy vehicles like tankers. “Tanker drivers must adhere to speed limits and prioritize safety, particularly when carrying hazardous materials. Speed and safety must never be compromised on our roads,” he emphasized.
Bakare-Oki also urged all road users to remain vigilant and cautious, as accidents like these can have devastating consequences. He reiterated that ensuring road safety is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation from all motorists.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety. The high volume of traffic on Lagos roads, combined with the presence of heavy vehicles, can create dangerous situations if proper precautions are not taken. Authorities continuously advocate for stricter adherence to speed limits and safety regulations to prevent similar accidents in the future.
In the wake of this tragedy, it is crucial for all drivers to remember their responsibility on the road. Whether driving a commercial vehicle or a personal car, everyone must prioritize safety to protect themselves and others.
