The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is currently engulfed in a significant internal crisis following the suspension of key leaders from its National Working Committee (NWC). In a statement issued by the PDP’s National Director of Publicity, Chinwe Nnorom, it was announced that both officials would face a disciplinary committee led by the Deputy National Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja. The internal conflict intensified when a faction within the party, loyal to the suspended leaders, retaliated by suspending the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu. This faction accused Damagum and Anyanwu of engaging in actions that undermined the party, particularly concerning a legal case involving 27 former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The faction led by Ologunagba condemned Damagum and Anyanwu for reaching out to the Court of Appeal. They claimed this action was against the party’s official position, which led to the move to suspend them. Ologunagba cited specific sections of the PDP Constitution to justify these disciplinary actions.
