The Labour Party (LP) is set to challenge a court ruling that confirmed Julius Abure as the party chairman. Senator Nenadi Usman, who leads the caretaker committee of the LP, announced this decision on Tuesday.
Usman stated that they plan to contest the recent judgment from the Federal High Court in Abuja, which supported the leadership of Abure. This ruling was based on the Nnewi Convention, which took place before the caretaker committee was established.
In her statement, Usman shared that she held discussions with key party figures, including Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the committee’s secretary. Together, they have decided to appeal the court’s decision.
Usman urged all party members to stay calm and maintain peace as they focus on reconciliation efforts within the party.
“This evening, I met with His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, His Excellency Governor Alex Otti, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha (Secretary, LP Caretaker Committee). We deliberated on the judgment passed today.
“The case actually preceded the formation of the Caretaker Committee. However, after being briefed, the Caretaker Committee decided to join the case. Consequently, we have resolved to appeal the judgment accordingly.
“I, therefore, call on all party members to remain calm and maintain peace as we continue our reconciliation efforts,” she said.
