Troops Capture Four Suspects and Seize 4,000 Liters of Stolen Condensates; Shut Down Illegal Refineries

In a decisive move to combat oil theft and illegal refining operations, the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division has conducted a series of successful operations in Rivers and Bayelsa States. These actions have resulted in the arrest of multiple suspects and the dismantling of illegal refining sites, demonstrating the army’s commitment to securing the nation’s oil resources.

The recent operations began in Rivers State, specifically in the Ogba/Ndoni/Egbema Local Government Area. Here, troops apprehended four individuals in possession of over 4,000 liters of stolen condensates. The suspects were discovered operating in a Toyota Camry with the registration number ZKW 648 AA Kaduna and a tricycle.

Lt. Col. Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, the acting deputy director of public relations for the 6 Division, provided details on the operation. He revealed that in addition to the arrests, the troops also targeted illegal refining sites, destroying five inactive facilities filled with empty metal drums. Furthermore, two additional suspects were arrested at Omoku, along the Orashi River, with a substantial quantity of stolen condensates.

The Nigerian Army’s crackdown extended beyond Rivers State, reaching Bayelsa State as well. In the Sabasuo area of Nembe Local Government Area, the troops deactivated several active illegal refining sites, successfully recovering over 2,800 liters of stolen oil products. This significant recovery highlights the ongoing challenges posed by illegal refining operations in the region.

In Southern Ijaw, the army dismantled another active illegal refining site, seizing over 2,500 liters of stolen products. These operations not only aim to recover stolen resources but also to send a clear message to those involved in illegal activities.

In addition to dismantling illegal refining sites, the troops made a notable interception of a wooden boat loaded with over 1,800 liters of stolen diesel. The boat was found near the Idewa/Waribokiri area in Ogbia Local Government Area, further emphasizing the extent of oil theft and the army’s proactive measures to counteract it.

The operations by the Nigerian Army are crucial for several reasons. Illegal refining and oil theft have far-reaching consequences for local communities and the economy. These activities not only lead to significant losses for the government but also contribute to environmental degradation and health hazards for nearby residents. By dismantling these operations, the army aims to protect both the environment and the livelihoods of those affected by illegal activities.

The recent actions by the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division reflect a robust approach to tackling the pervasive issue of oil theft and illegal refining in Nigeria. With multiple arrests, the destruction of illegal facilities, and the recovery of significant quantities of stolen oil products, these efforts represent a critical step toward safeguarding the nation’s resources. As the army continues its crackdown, the hope is that these operations will deter future illegal activities and promote a more secure and sustainable environment for all.
