Police Launch E-CMR Enforcement Patrol Van

The Nigerian police have introduced a new e-CMR enforcement patrol van, designed to make vehicle checks easier and faster. This van is equipped with gadgets that allow officers to verify important information about a vehicle, such as its registration status or if it has been reported stolen. With this system, officers won’t need to stop drivers to ask for their papers. Instead, they can access the Central Motor Registry (CMR) electronically from their patrol cars.

The e-CMR, or electronic Central Motor Registry, is a digitized version of the police vehicle registry. It allows police to instantly access information about any car using their patrol van’s computer. This includes checking if the car is properly registered, or if it has been flagged as stolen. If someone’s vehicle is stolen, they can report it to the police, and the car will be marked in the system. This means patrol officers will easily recognize the vehicle if they come across it during their duties.

While the e-CMR system aims to improve efficiency, it has sparked debate among various groups. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and other activists have raised concerns, arguing that the police should not be in charge of vehicle registrations. According to them, other government agencies are responsible for this task, and the police enforcing such a system is seen as overstepping their authority.

Another major concern is the cost of registering for the e-CMR. The fee, which is about ₦5,000 to ₦6,000, has been criticized as an extra burden for Nigerians who are already struggling with tough economic conditions. These groups have even threatened legal action if the police force motorists to register under this system.

Due to the backlash, the Inspector General of Police has decided to suspend the enforcement of the e-CMR for now. He explained that the system is legal and falls within the police’s duty to combat crime. However, the police will use this time to carry out public education campaigns to inform Nigerians about the benefits of the e-CMR and clear up misunderstandings. Despite the suspension of enforcement, motorists are still encouraged to register their vehicles on the platform.

The e-CMR enforcement patrol van is a step towards modernizing the Nigerian police force. While there is opposition, the goal of the system is to enhance security and reduce crime, especially when it comes to stolen vehicles. As the police work to raise awareness, the public will need to understand how the e-CMR can benefit both motorists and law enforcement.

Ultimately, the success of the e-CMR will depend on how well the police can balance law enforcement with addressing public concerns, and ensuring that the system does not add unnecessary burdens to Nigerian citizens.
