Government Warns of Thunderstorms, Hail, and Lightning Across the Country

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert predicting thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and the possibility of hailstorms across various parts of Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday this week. This announcement urges residents to prepare for potential disruptions caused by severe weather conditions.

According to NiMet’s forecast, the northern region of Nigeria will likely experience localized thunderstorms, with states like Kebbi and Zamfara affected in the early morning hours. As the day progresses, other northern states such as Kaduna, Bauchi, Adamawa, and Taraba may also see thunderstorms.

In the central parts of Nigeria, morning thunderstorms are expected in Niger and Kwara States, with further storms predicted in the afternoon over the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja), Nasarawa, Plateau, Kogi, and Kwara States.

Southern Nigeria is also not left out. Thunderstorms are likely in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, and Ondo States in the morning. By the afternoon and evening, states like Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Imo, Enugu, and others could also experience similar weather conditions.

On Tuesday, thunderstorms are forecasted to affect northern states such as Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, and Katsina in the morning, with additional storms expected later in Adamawa, Taraba, and Kaduna. Southern and central regions are expected to see similar patterns, with storms predicted throughout the day.

The weather on Wednesday is expected to follow the same trend, with morning thunderstorms over northern states like Zamfara and Kebbi and later storms in central and southern Nigeria, including parts of Oyo, Lagos, and Cross River.

NiMet has urged residents to take precautionary measures and avoid flood-prone areas, as the expected heavy rains could cause urban flooding. Strong winds might also accompany the storms, potentially causing damage in some areas. People living in vulnerable areas should stay indoors during thunderstorms and secure loose objects around their homes.

Airline operators are advised to stay updated with specific weather reports from NiMet to ensure safe flight planning during this period of unpredictable weather.

Staying informed and adhering to safety advisories will help ensure everyone’s safety during this period of heavy thunderstorms and hail. You can stay updated by checking the latest weather reports from NiMet and other relevant authorities.
