Court Approves Lawsuit to Force Federal Government to Investigate Ex-Zamfara Governor Bello Matawalle for Banditry Allegations

A Federal High Court in Abuja has recently approved a significant lawsuit seeking to compel the Nigerian government to investigate the alleged connections between former Zamfara Governor Bello Matawalle and banditry activities in Zamfara State. This development has raised critical questions about governance and public safety in a region deeply affected by violence and crime.

The lawsuit was filed by Abubakar Dahiru, a human rights activist based in Zamfara. He has taken the bold step of naming key government officials in the suit, including President Bola Tinubu, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Inspector General of Police. Dahiru’s lawyer, Mr. Ojonimi Apeh, is pushing for the court to order President Tinubu to direct the Inspector General of Police to conduct a thorough investigation into the alarming banditry and kidnapping crisis plaguing Zamfara.

The case is marked as FHC/ABJ/CS/1434/2024 and aims to address the urgent need for public safety in the region, which has suffered greatly from these issues. Dahiru claims that a proper investigation is necessary to ensure accountability and restore peace to Zamfara.

Dahiru has outlined serious allegations against Matawalle, including claims that he has been involved in sponsoring bandits, providing vehicles to them, and interfering with law enforcement efforts aimed at combating crime. These allegations are particularly grave given the context of ongoing violence in Zamfara, where banditry has led to numerous deaths, the displacement of thousands, and significant economic hardship for residents.

Current Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal and various media outlets have made statements accusing Matawalle of direct involvement with banditry during his time in office from 2019 to 2023. Dahiru has highlighted that the lack of government action to investigate these serious accusations only adds to the suffering of the people in Zamfara.

The gravity of the situation cannot be overstated. Banditry has wreaked havoc on communities in Zamfara, resulting in a humanitarian crisis that requires urgent attention. Dahiru argues that without an official inquiry, the truth may remain hidden, allowing those responsible for these crimes to evade justice. He is advocating for the court to mandate a comprehensive investigation that would bring to light the connections between political figures and criminal activities.

As of now, the court has not set a date for the hearing of the case. This delay leaves many questions unanswered for the citizens of Zamfara, who are eager for justice and accountability. The outcome of this lawsuit could have far-reaching implications for how the Nigerian government addresses issues of banditry and political corruption in the region.

The approval of this lawsuit marks a crucial step towards addressing the complex issues of banditry and governance in Zamfara State. It underscores the importance of holding public officials accountable and ensuring that justice is served. As the case progresses, all eyes will be on the Federal High Court to see how it navigates these serious allegations and what actions will be taken to restore peace and safety to the region.
