Four suspects Arrested for S3xtortion and Romance Scam

The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center (NPF-NCCC) has made significant progress in combating online fraud with the recent arrest of four suspects involved in a s3xtortion and romance scam. This incident sheds light on the dangers of online dating and the need for heightened awareness among internet users.

The suspects, identified as Abodunrin Rasheed, Abodunrin Tunde, and Abodunrin Rokeeb, were apprehended following a report made through the NPF-NCCC E-Reporting portal. This portal allows citizens to report cybercrime-related incidents easily and efficiently. In addition to the report, the arrests were made possible by intelligence gathered from the center, showcasing the effectiveness of collaborative efforts in tackling cybercrime.

The investigation revealed that the suspects had targeted a Croatian national using a dating app. Posing as a woman, they established a relationship with the victim, likely using manipulative tactics to gain their trust. Once they had built this connection, they proceeded to extort money from the victim, leveraging their false identity and the emotional bond they created.

According to ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police are committed to investigating such cases thoroughly. He emphasized that this incident underscores the importance of vigilance when engaging in online interactions.

The suspects are expected to face charges in court once the investigation is complete. This step is crucial in holding them accountable for their actions and deterring similar scams in the future. The police’s commitment to prosecuting cybercriminals sends a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated.

’Their continuous chats progressed to Instagram and WhatsApp leading to an intimate relationship. However, the Croatian was deceived into sending nude pictures of himself through the dating app. The suspects subsequently conspired and pressured him to pay ransom or have his pictures sent to his family and friends.

The operatives of the NPF-NCCC conducted a due investigation, following the obtained information from the report, which led to the apprehension of the suspects and the recovery of the following exhibits related to the crime. The recovered exhibits include six iPhones, one Techno phone, one Samsung phone, and a Lexus car.

Further investigations revealed that the suspects have previously engaged in numerous similar cybercriminal activities, both collectively and individually, defrauding and extorting numerous victims globally. The proceeds of these crimes were primarily received through gift cards like iTunes gift cards, steam gift cards etc.”
