Dr. Julius Oni, a Nigerian medical doctor, recently shared his decision to leave his job at Johns Hopkins University in the United States after 25 years. In a viral video, he explained the reasons behind this significant choice.
Dr. Oni revealed that he sold his house and cars to prepare for this transition. He took a leave of absence from his job to return to Nigeria with his family. Throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to work with patients from various countries, gaining valuable experience and insights.
However, he felt a strong desire to bring his skills and knowledge back to Nigeria. He believes that he can make a difference in his home country and contribute to improving healthcare there. This decision, though challenging, was driven by his commitment to serve his community and family.
“I know at this point, some of you may call me delusional or even crazy but I am neither, I am just a man full of conviction. I happen to believe that Nigerian patients deserve great care too.
“As part of my mission, I have started DOC Medical Nigeria, which offers high-quality musculoskeletal care to the population, part of my effort is to provide access to care so that people do not have to travel to access high-quality orthopedic surgery care.”
Dr. Oni’s story resonates with many who have faced similar dilemmas between career opportunities abroad and the desire to contribute to their homeland. His journey highlights the sacrifices made for family and the passion for making a positive impact back home.
“I am humbled to say that people are coming from near and fear, near as Ghana and as far as the UK. There are many patients that will otherwise have travelled but now have access to quality orthopedic quality surgery on the ground.”
