In a major security operation, the Anambra State Police Command has arrested two men after discovering a large quantity of gunpowder concealed in bags of garri. This significant breakthrough occurred on Sunday when the police, in collaboration with other security forces, conducted a routine intelligence-driven patrol along the pillar-pole area of Aguata, Anambra State.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect, whose identity is yet to be disclosed, was intercepted while carrying three bags of garri. Upon a thorough search of the bags, officers uncovered a large amount of gunpowder hidden underneath the garri, a common West African food. Further investigation revealed that the suspect was en route to a criminal camp, where the food supplies were intended for consumption and the gunpowder was meant to create improvised explosives.
In addition to the gunpowder, the police also recovered one locally-made pistol and live ammunition during the operation. This has led authorities to believe that the group planned to use the materials for violent activities. The suspect is currently in police custody, cooperating with the investigation to help identify and arrest other members of the criminal gang.
This arrest is part of an ongoing effort by the Anambra State Police Command to disrupt criminal activities in the region. The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, emphasized that the police and other security agencies remain committed to using intelligence and surveillance to thwart the plans of criminal elements in the state. The Commissioner reiterated that the collaboration between various security forces continues to bear fruit as more criminal activities are prevented.
In another operation carried out on the same day, the Special Anti-Cultism Squad (SPACS) acted on credible information to storm a criminal hideout in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area. During the early morning raid, police arrested one Nelson Wisdom, a man from Etsako East in Edo State. Upon his arrest, officers recovered a locally fabricated pistol and two live bullets from the scene. This successful operation is another indication of the police’s determination to maintain law and order by dismantling criminal networks across the state.
The efforts of the Anambra State Police Command and their joint security partners have been praised by local communities, who have been living in fear due to the rise in criminal activities. By focusing on intelligence-driven operations, the police hope to not only intercept dangerous criminals but also prevent the flow of illegal weapons and explosives that can cause further harm.
The Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and useful information. He stressed that these ongoing efforts are part of a broader strategy to safeguard the people of Anambra and ensure that criminal activities are curbed.
The recent arrests and recovery of dangerous materials like gunpowder and firearms are a positive sign that the Anambra State Police Command is making headway in its fight against crime. The proactive approach, including intelligent surveillance, quick response, and community involvement, will help strengthen security in the state. As the investigation continues, the police are confident that they will apprehend the rest of the criminal group and prevent future threats to peace and stability.
“All suspects shall be charged to court on the conclusion of the investigation,” the statement added.
