The recent Edo State governorship election has concluded with Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) declared the winner. With a total of 291,667 votes, Okpebholo triumphed over his closest competitor, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes.
In a press conference held in Benin City, Adams Oshiomhole, the Senator representing Edo North and a former governor of the state, praised Okpebholo’s victory as a manifestation of divine will. Oshiomhole stated, “Anything God cannot do does not exist,” underlining his belief that ultimate power resides with God.
He remarked on the nature of the election, emphasizing that it should not have been perceived as a “do or die” situation. “It is about choice,” he said, asserting that the election was an opportunity for the people to express their preferences.
Oshiomhole did not shy away from criticizing the previous administration, led by Governor Godwin Obaseki and his ally, Ighodalo. He characterized their tenure as “eight years of disaster,” suggesting that Okpebholo’s win signifies a fresh start for the state. Oshiomhole expressed optimism that the new administration would work towards reversing the challenges faced by the citizens during the previous governance.
The senator also highlighted the importance of faith in politics, noting that many voters turned out not just for a candidate but as an expression of their beliefs. He thanked the people of Edo for their support and urged them to continue working together for the betterment of the state.
As the new governor, Okpebholo’s agenda will likely focus on addressing the issues raised during the campaign, including economic development, education, and infrastructure improvements. His supporters hope that his leadership will usher in a new era of progress and stability for Edo State.
This election has marked a significant shift in Edo State’s political landscape, with many residents eager to see the changes that Okpebholo will implement in his administration. The eyes of both supporters and opponents will be closely watching as he takes on the challenges ahead, aiming to fulfill the promises made during his campaign.
