A heartbreaking tragedy occurred in Hawaii when a pregnant woman and her husband drowned while on vacation. Ilya Tsaruk, 25, and Sophia Tsaruk, 26, from Snohomish, Washington, were at the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve in Maui on September 14 when they got into trouble in the water.
The Maui Fire Department was called after reports of swimmers in distress. When rescuers arrived, they found Sophia about 100 to 150 yards offshore and pulled her from the water. Despite attempts to revive both Sophia and Ilya with CPR, they could not be saved and were declared dead by Emergency Medical Services.
Sophia was expecting a baby girl at the time of her death. The couple leaves behind their 18-month-old son, Logan, who was with his aunt and uncle during the tragic event.
