A deadly outbreak of violence occurred during the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) election in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, leaving three people feared dead and many injured. The election was organized by the Jonathan Lokpobiri-led IYC for the Eastern Zone, but things took a tragic turn when gunshots rang out in the area.
Eyewitnesses mentioned that three people were killed, though the exact number of casualties is still unknown. The sudden violence caused panic, with residents fleeing to safety.
Rivers State Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the incident, calling the shooting “senseless,” but did not confirm any deaths. Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, quickly deployed tactical teams to the scene. However, by the time they arrived, the attackers had already escaped.
The police are now on a mission to find those responsible and ensure justice is served.
