In a heartbreaking incident in Nasarawa State, four farmers lost their lives in a boat accident while on their way to the Ashangwa market. The victims, one man and three women, were part of a group traveling from Alogani village when the boat they were in sank.
Eyewitness Abdul Hamid Sale, who was present at the scene, shared his grief and frustration over the loss. According to him, the accident could have been avoided. He explained that the farmers were forced to take the boat due to the lack of proper road connections between local communities.
The boat, which was overloaded with 25 passengers, also carried four motorcycles and several bags of melon. Sale believes that the excessive weight likely contributed to the sinking.
“If we had proper road networks here, no one would risk their lives by boarding a boat with so much cargo,” Sale lamented, highlighting how the lack of basic infrastructure pushes residents into risky situations.
Haruna Muhammed, the overseer of the Lafia East Development Area, confirmed that local authorities are investigating the tragic event to determine the exact cause. Experienced fishermen have also been called to help recover the remaining bodies and property from the water.
This tragedy brings attention to the region’s ongoing challenges with road infrastructure. Local communities are often forced to rely on alternative, unsafe forms of transportation, making accidents like this a tragic reality. Improving road networks could save lives and prevent further tragedies.
