Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has announced that the new 6,000-capacity Edo Arena will be named after Afrobeats music sensation, Rema. This decision highlights the governor’s commitment to celebrating talented individuals from Edo State who have gained international recognition.
The announcement was made during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Edo Arena, held in Benin City on Wednesday. Rema, who was in town for his homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium, attended the event and had the honor of laying the first block for the new arena.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Obaseki praised Rema for his contribution to music and his positive impact on young people in Nigeria and around the world. He emphasized that the Edo Arena would not only serve as a hub for entertainment but also stand as a symbol of pride for the people of Edo State.
The Governor said,
“It was a pleasure to have our global music icon @heisrema, join me in performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena. The arena, which will be called ‘Rema’s Dome,’ is located at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City,”
“allowing them to experience our rich culture and what we have to offer, which will create employment opportunities for our youths.”
Rema expressed his gratitude to the governor and the people of Edo State for the recognition, saying it was a huge honor to have such an important facility named after him. The arena, once completed, is expected to host a variety of events, from music concerts and sports competitions to cultural festivals, boosting tourism and economic activity in the state.
By naming the Edo Arena after Rema, Governor Obaseki aims to inspire other young talents in Edo State to pursue their dreams and make a mark on the world stage.
