NAFDAC Clarifies Saccharine Use in Bread Production: What You Need to Know

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has recently issued a significant clarification regarding the use of saccharine in bread production. This move comes in response to concerns and misinformation circulating about the safety and regulation of food additives.

NAFDAC has made it clear that saccharine, a type of artificial sweetener, is not approved for use in bread under both Nigerian and international food safety standards. According to the Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) and the Codex General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA), saccharine is not allowed in bread production. These regulations are in place to ensure that food products meet safety and quality requirements.

The Codex General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA) is an authoritative guideline for food additives worldwide, while the Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) provide specific rules for food safety in Nigeria. Both of these standards prohibit the use of saccharine in bread.

Before any food additive, including sweeteners like saccharine, can be approved for use, it must undergo a thorough safety assessment. This process is conducted by expert bodies such as the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). JECFA evaluates the potential risks associated with food additives to ensure they are safe for consumption before they can be used in food products.

Recently, a video circulated online in which a reporter suggested that people should avoid eating bread in Nigeria due to the use of unapproved additives. NAFDAC has responded to this misinformation by clarifying that the reporter’s comments do not represent the agency’s official stance. The agency assured the public that it is fully committed to safeguarding public health and ensuring that food products comply with safety regulations.

NAFDAC emphasized that it is actively monitoring the food market to enforce compliance with food safety standards. The agency is dedicated to taking necessary actions to ensure that all food products, including bread, are safe for consumption. In conclusion, NAFDAC’s recent clarification aims to clear up any confusion about the use of saccharine in bread and reaffirm the agency’s commitment to maintaining high food safety standards. The public can be assured that NAFDAC is vigilant in its efforts to protect health and ensure that all food products meet the required safety guidelines.
