Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo recently addressed claims suggesting that he is of Igbo origin, a topic that has sparked conversation in some circles. During a meeting at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with the leadership of the Ndigbo Amaka Progressive Market Association, he humorously dismissed the speculation, stating, “It makes me laugh.”
Obasanjo’s response came as he hosted the association, an umbrella body representing major markets in Lagos State. While the idea of him being of Igbo descent has floated around for some time, Obasanjo made it clear that the claim holds no substance for him, and he finds the notion amusing.
Shifting focus to a more serious topic, the former president emphasized the importance of unity across Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups. According to him, no Nigerian should be made to feel unwelcome in any part of the country. He highlighted the collective effort of Yorubas, Igbos, and Hausas in fighting for the unity of Nigeria during the civil war, stating that the goal was never to separate but to bring everyone together.
“We own this country together,” Obasanjo said, stressing that all Nigerians have the right to live and thrive in any region they choose. He strongly affirmed his belief in national unity by adding, “If anyone says someone should leave a place, they will be the one to leave.”
With these words, Obasanjo once again underscored his dedication to fostering harmony and inclusivity among all Nigerians, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds.
