Flood in Jigawa Kills 16 and Destroys Thousands of Homes

A severe flood has struck Jigawa State in Nigeria, resulting in the tragic deaths of 16 people and leaving thousands displaced. The flood, caused by heavy and continuous rainfall, has destroyed 3,936 homes and submerged 2,744 hectares of farmland across 10 local government areas in the state.

According to Dr. Haruna Mariga, Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency, the casualties were due to building collapses, drowning, and canoe accidents. The flood has displaced 3,936 people, and with the rainy season far from over, there are concerns that the situation could escalate.

The agency is working hard to support those affected by the disaster. They have set up temporary shelters and distributed relief materials such as rice, maize, blankets, pasta, and mats to ease the suffering of the displaced.

As the rainy season continues, authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to take precautions and seek higher ground to avoid further loss of life and property. The government is also monitoring the situation closely and preparing for additional relief efforts should the flooding worsen.

This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the impact of climate change and extreme weather conditions on communities, particularly in vulnerable regions. Efforts to improve infrastructure and early warning systems are crucial in preventing future disasters of this magnitude.
