The FBI has launched an investigation into a suspected hack of sensitive documents from former President Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. This investigation was confirmed in a statement by the FBI on Monday, August 12th.
The alleged hack came to light after Trump’s campaign accused Iran of being behind the cyberattack. The breach reportedly involved internal documents related to the vetting of Sen. JD Vance, who was recently chosen as Trump’s running mate for the upcoming presidential election.
According to Politico, the outlet began receiving emails on July 22nd from an anonymous AOL account. These emails contained campaign communications belonging to a senior Trump campaign official. The documents included details about Sen. Vance’s record, past statements, and potential vulnerabilities, all of which were later confirmed as authentic by insiders.
Trump’s campaign spokesman, Steven Cheung, stated that the documents were “obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States” in an attempt to interfere with the 2024 election and create chaos within the democratic process. He emphasized that the timing of the hack was suspicious, noting that Microsoft had recently revealed Iranian hackers were targeting a presidential campaign. The hack also followed reports of an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate Trump.
Former President Trump, 78, took to Truth Social to claim that one of his campaign websites had been hacked by the Iranian government. He clarified that the hackers were only able to access publicly available information, but expressed concern over Iran’s actions. Trump criticized the current U.S. administration as “weak and ineffective,” but assured his followers that this would not be the case for long.
The allegations and subsequent FBI investigation highlight the ongoing concerns about foreign interference in U.S. elections. As the investigation unfolds, more details are expected to emerge about the extent of the hack and the potential impact on the 2024 presidential race.
