Activist lawyer Femi Falana has declared that waving the Russian flag and calling for the overthrow of President Bola Tinubu’s administration amounts to treason. He urges those involved to stop, as it abuses their constitutional rights.
Speaking to the press on Monday, Falana emphasized that while peaceful protests are a fundamental right, they must remain within the law. He voiced his support for the #endbadgovernance protests but expressed concern over the involvement of undemocratic elements who exploit these peaceful protests to incite violence or call for a military coup.
Falana highlighted that waving the Russian flag, a symbol associated with supporting unconstitutional changes in Africa, is a serious misuse of the right to protest. Legitimate protests against hardship in Nigeria should not be turned into campaigns for unconstitutional changes in government.
He cautioned those advocating for another military rule to cease their actions immediately or risk being charged with treasonable felony under section 41 of the Criminal Code Act. This section deals with offenses related to attempts to undermine the government.
