The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) recently made significant drug seizures at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and a courier firm. They intercepted several shipments of illegal drugs disguised as baby food and clothing items meant for the US and UK.
On July 31, 2024, NDLEA agents discovered 36 parcels of strong cannabis hidden in tins of Nestle Cerelac baby food at the airport’s export shed. The total weight of the drugs was 18.5 kilograms. The freight agent handling the shipment, Salaudeen Suliat Abiola, was arrested, and further investigation led to the arrest of the sender, Bello Motunrayo Folu, in Ibadan.
The drugs were cleverly concealed in factory-sealed Cerelac tins, with the bottom tampered to hide the substances beneath the baby food. NDLEA officers were able to detect and stop the smuggling attempt.
In another operation on July 29, 2024, NDLEA agents intercepted five shipments of opioids and psychoactive substances hidden in clothing items. These drugs included promethazine, pentazocine, diazepam, tramadol, and morphine. One shipment was headed to the US, and four were going to the UK.
Additionally, on August 2, 2024, NDLEA officers at the Tincan port in Lagos recovered 77 packages of Canadian Loud, a type of synthetic cannabis, hidden in the compartments of four imported vehicles. The total weight of this seizure was 38.5 kilograms, and two suspects, Salami Abiodun Sunday and Lekan Atoyebi, were arrested.
The NDLEA continues to crack down on drug smuggling operations, showcasing their vigilance in preventing illegal substances from reaching their destinations.
