“‘Our hearts ache’ – Women’s Group Appeals to Nigerians to Rethink Nationwide Protest”

A women’s group called the Women Initiative for Family Economy is asking Nigerians to reconsider the planned nationwide protest due to its potential negative impacts. Speaking at a press conference, Ambassador Aisha Abdulkadir, the group’s coordinator, acknowledged the right to peaceful protest as a fundamental part of democracy and a powerful way to express concerns.

However, she warned that protests could severely disrupt the economy and essential services, affecting daily wage earners, small business owners, students, and hospital patients the most. She also mentioned the tragic outcomes of the EndSARS protests in October 2020, which started peacefully but ended in chaos and hardship.

The group highlighted that while protests are crucial for highlighting economic hardships, dialogue might be a more effective way to address grievances and work towards sustainable solutions. The government, they emphasized, is committed to solving these economic issues.

Ambassador Abdulkadir urged for cooperation instead of disruption, encouraging Nigerians to seek peaceful and strategic ways to advocate for change. She expressed concern over the potential loss of lives and emphasized the need to protect the nation’s youth.

The Women Initiative for Family Economy believes in working together to build a prosperous Nigeria for everyone and hopes that through dialogue and peaceful means, the necessary changes can be achieved without further harm.
