In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court of Nigeria has declared that governors do not possess the legal authority to dissolve democratically elected local government councils.
The apex court emphasized that such actions by governors constitute a direct violation of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.
Justice Emmanuel Agim, delivering the lead judgement, criticized governors for their longstanding refusal to grant autonomy to local governments and highlighted previous rulings granting financial autonomy to the 774 local government councils in the country.
