Edo Taskforce Arrests Woman for Attempted Human Trafficking to India

The Edo State Taskforce on Human Trafficking has detained a 42-year-old woman named Juliet Ukhurebor for allegedly trying to traffic someone.

Officials caught the suspect at her shrine in Benin City, where they found a native pot with concoctions as evidence.

Pauline Irusota, the taskforce secretary, told reporters in Benin City that Juliet Ukhurebor was arrested along with Joy Osawe.

Irusota said that the arrests followed a complaint by a 25-year-old woman named Rita Godwin.

Rita accused Juliet Ukhurebor and her daughter in India of forging Ghanaian passports and other documents to traffic people to India.

Irusota explained that Juliet Ukhurebor had already sent a girl named Juliet Osagie to India.

The taskforce secretary stated that the victims were only told they were going to India for prostitution after taking an oath.

She added that when Rita Godwin found out, she refused to travel to India and stopped her journey to Abuja.

Said Irusota,

“Because Rita refused to travel, the main suspect and a native doctor from Enugu State started threatening her to pay N8 million for the travel documents,”

The suspect was arrested at her shrine, and investigators found a native pot with concoctions.

In an interview, Juliet Ukhurebor said she made her victims take an oath to ensure they obeyed instructions abroad.

She claimed the oath was meant to scare the victims into not escaping or misbehaving in India.

Juliet Ukhurebor said she followed her daughter’s instructions from India to make the victims take an oath.

Her daughter wanted the victims to take an oath because she spent money on their travel documents and didn’t want them to run away or refuse to repay the expenses.
