Nigerian Presidency Urges Patience on Minimum Wage Bill

The Presidency is asking Nigerians to wait calmly and not rush President Bola Tinubu regarding the new minimum wage.

Government reassures that once ready, Tinubu will send the proposed bill to the National Assembly.

Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, questioned the urgency in transmitting the bill, speaking to Punch.

Onanuga’s stance follows Organised Labour’s request for prior consultation before the bill’s transmission, raised within 24 hours.

The Union expressed concern over delays by Tinubu in moving the wage bill forward, stalling the National Executive Committee, which includes around 300 Labour leaders.

The President announced during his Democracy Day address that a consensus had been achieved with Labour on the new wage, a statement disputed by Organised Labour.

Onanuga acknowledged uncertainty about the submission timeline but urged patience, saying, “People should wait calmly.”

His plea comes a week after he emphasized that the workers’ union’s demand for a ₦250,000 wage is unsustainable, cautioning against exhausting all government resources to meet it.
