Students at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) have accused the university’s medical staff of negligence leading to the death of Ayodele Israel, a 100-level student.
Ayodele, who studied Agricultural Economics and Farm Management (AEFM), died from an asthma attack. His classmates protested on Thursday, seeking justice for his death.
The protesting students blamed the campus medical staff for not performing their duties properly, which they believe caused Ayodele’s death.
In response, Olasunkanmi Olajide, the Acting Head of the Directorate of Public Relations, denied any fault by the medical team.
Olajide confirmed Ayodele’s death but blamed his friends for mishandling the situation. He said they tried to help Ayodele by inserting a spoon into his mouth and pouring water on him, then looking for a motorcycle (Okada) to take him to the health center.
When Ayodele reached the health center, doctors, a matron, and nurses attended to him but found he had already died. Olajide said an ambulance should have been called instead of using an Okada.
Professor Babatunde Kehinde, the Vice-Chancellor of FUNAAB, met with Ayodele’s parents to express condolences and support.
The university has set up a committee to investigate the incident to find out what happened and how to prevent similar cases in the future.
