Cholera Outbreak in Ogun State: One Dead, Five Hospitalized

A 62-year-old woman has died from cholera in Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State. She caught the disease while looking after her sick child, who is now in the hospital. This sad event happened three days ago.

Ogun State Health Commissioner, Dr. Tomi Coker, confirmed that one person has died and five others are in the hospital due to the cholera outbreak in Ijebu-Igbo, located in the Ijebu-North area of the state.

Dr. Kunle Ashimi, the chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association in Ogun State, spoke about the cholera outbreak at a press conference on Thursday, June 20. He mentioned that cholera has spread to 30 states in Nigeria, including Ogun.

Dr. Ashimi said cholera patients in Ogun State would get free treatment at special hospitals. He asked people to follow safety measures to stop cholera from spreading, such as not defecating in the open, not dumping trash carelessly, washing hands often, cleaning fruits and vegetables before eating, and treating drinking water by boiling it or using chemicals.

Dr. Ashimi suggested using two drops of plain household bleach in one liter of water if other treatment methods are unavailable. He also urged schools to ensure food vendors practice good hygiene and to bring back handwashing stations like those used during COVID-19.
