In Ondo State, a 45-year-old woman named Abiodun, also known as “Iya Sunday,” poured petrol on her 86-year-old mother and set her on fire, believing her mother was responsible for her misfortunes.

The incident occurred in Surulere, opposite Anglican Cathedral Church, on Friday, June 14, 2024. Abiodun’s mother suffered severe burns and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

According to a witness, the daughter visited her mother’s home around 5 am and accused her of causing her spiritual troubles before committing the act.

Abiodun confessed to intentionally setting her mother on fire after consulting with a pastor who claimed her mother was the source of her problems.

The police have arrested Abiodun and are conducting further investigations into the tragic incident, which has shocked the community.
